Angle 23 by Miki Kratsman & Shabtai Pinchevsky

Multipress

This is the 23rd issue of Angle, a zine series published irregularly by the Norwegian independent publisher Multipress. Issues 21-24 were curated by Dutch independent curator Hester Keijser as a guest.

This issue features "Khan al-Ahmar" by Miki Kratsman and Shabtai Pinchevsky.

In this project, entitled "Anti Mapping," Kratzman and Pinchevski set out to independently research and document the geography of Palestinian territories, as an alternative to the official photographic maps produced by the Israeli government. The images released by the government are subject to military considerations and, in particular, the aerial photographs must be low-resolution (compared to international standards). The unclear maps imply the ease with which small settlements can be relocated or removed, thus raising questions of power.

Kratzman and Pinchevski have taken higher resolution and more accurate images, some of which are drone photos, to show more of the reality. The area they are mapping, Khan al-Amar, is made up of 12 Palestinian settlements with a total of 1,400 residents. The people there have low incomes, little access to welfare and education, and the area lacks basic infrastructure. They are trying to make these places, which are at risk of disappearing, visible on the map and in reality.
