Dashwood Books

A collection of works by Japanese photographer Yurie Nagashima.

This book includes a selection of photos from a slideshow of nearly 700 self-portraits exhibited at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum in 2017, "And a Pinch of Irony and a Little Bit of Love." The photos begin with black-and-white works from his student days as a backpacker in 1992, followed by early nudes that led to his recognition as an artist, setup photographs that convey the atmosphere of Tokyo in the 1990s, and photos taken while studying abroad at California Institute of the Arts. The book begins with a conversation with Lesley A. Martin, creative director of the Aperture Foundation, in both Japanese and English.

"After giving birth, I started to focus more on feminist issues in my work, and after the nuclear accident in 2011, I started paying more attention to the politics of my country. My themes have also changed due to my personal interests and as I have gotten older. When I was younger, I thought that my body was my own and I could use it however I wanted, but that view completely changed after my son was born. I consider my photographs, whether they are set-ups or snapshots, to be very personal works." - Yurie Nagashima
