(Signed) Muscle, beefsteak…beefsteak run amok by Mariken Kramer
A collection of works by Oslo-based artist Mariken Kramer.
The work is based on the artist's experience in her role as sculpture educator for children and young people at the National Museum in Oslo. The seemingly unusual title is borrowed from a quote from sculptor Constantin Brancusi, who is said to have spoken in 1925 when describing Michelangelo's sculptures to a journalist: "The decline of sculpture began with Michelangelo... How can you sleep in the same room, much less next to, a sculpture of Moses? Michelangelo's sculptures are just muscles and beefsteaks... Yes, just a chunk of beefsteak going wild."
Through his radical attitude towards art history and his exploratory, personal approach to conventional creative processes, Brancusi helped to expand the boundaries of artistic appreciation. Cramé follows suit in this book, working freely and playfully with the form, material and content of his sculptures. Brooklyn-based writer Kyra Simone also pens two short fictional pieces on the themes of "Muscle," "beefsteak" and "beefsteak run amok."
