Self Published

A collection of photographs by Vienna-based photographer Eugenia Maximova.

This work contains photographs taken in nine countries on the Balkan Peninsula between 2010 and 2012. The first part contains photographs of kitchens, and the second part combines recipes of dishes familiar to Balkan dining tables with photographs of tablecloths. A beautiful collection of works that calmly depict a wide variety of kitchens.

"The kitchen is a multi-purpose room, a space that directly reflects the identity and self-perception of the occupants. It embodies the spirit of Balkan housing and reflects society as a whole. People in the Balkans spend their little money in cafes rather than decorating the interior, etc. The resulting functional, no-frills kitchen style is a lost identity of the region. and gives us a tangible sense of the inevitable legacy that arises from 500 years of Ottoman rule and half a century obscured by the Iron Curtain.” —Eugenia Maximova

*The Iron Curtain is a metaphor used to describe the tension between East and West in Europe during the Cold War.
