A collection of works by the photographer duo Jean-Marc Caimi + Valentina Piccinni.

In recent years, a tree disease called pierce disease has caused devastating damage, mainly in olive groves in southern Italy. Pierce's disease is a plant disease caused by the pathogen Xylella fastidiosa. Spread by sap-sucking insects, the disease blocks the flow of water and nutrients through the xylem tubes, killing the tree from the inside out. The first case since its discovery in California in the late 1990s was found in the Gallipoli region of Italy in 2013, quickly killing olive trees in southern Italy. In response to this situation, the EU authorities have formulated a policy to cut down all trees within 100 meters of infected trees, regardless of whether they are infected or not. As a result, the region's economy, whose main industry is the production of olive oil, was hit hard, and farmers across Europe feared the spread of the pathogen.

In southern Italy, the olive tree is a symbolic tree that is important not only economically but also historically and culturally. As the epicenter of the epidemic, prompt action is desired, while local residents are campaigning against the ruthless logging. I'm having a difficult time. Millions of trees have already been cut down to date, and no cure has been found for the disease either. However, agronomists and scientists are working to control disease-carrying pests and to graft wild olives found in Pierce-affected areas onto faster-growing tree species to create resistant "supertrees." We are conducting an experiment to create

This book is the work of French photographer Jean-Marc Caimi and Italian photographer Valentina Piccinni. Recorded photos taken while living in an oil factory. The situation farmers face and their stories are compiled into a visual book.
