Paintings: Jean-Philippe Delhomme
A monograph by French artist Jean-Philippe Delhomme.
This is Delhomme’s first comprehensive collection, bringing together 175 works created between 2012 and 2022. The works are organised according to the cities where he maintained studios—New York, Paris, Los Angeles, Asnières in the suburbs of Paris, and again in Paris.
In the late 1980s, when painting—particularly figurative work—was often considered outdated in the art world, Delhomme turned his attention to print media. Newspapers, magazines, and posters offered a more vivid and immediate way of engaging with the public—much like a composer broadcasting music on the radio. In the 1990s, he created a series of gouache illustrations for an advertising campaign by Barneys New York. These works were accompanied by texts from Glenn O'Brien, the poet, writer, and critic known for his ties to figures like Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, which drew considerable attention.
Since then, Delhomme has continued to develop a body of work that bridges wit and social commentary, contributing essays, fiction, columns, and illustrations to various publications in France and abroad.
Alongside these pursuits, he has steadily produced paintings depicting landscapes, friends, and family. At a time when narrative figuration is regaining recognition in contemporary painting, Delhomme consciously avoids narrative or stylisation, instead aiming to render the presence of people and objects in a direct and unadorned manner.
