Politics/Poetics: Documenta X - The Book

Hatje Cantz

Exhibition catalog published in conjunction with the 10th documenta held in Kassel, Germany from June 21 to September 28, 1997.

Documenta, which started in Kassel in 1955, is a large-scale international art exhibition held every four or five years. That year, Catherine David became the first female artistic director of documenta. Centering on the concept of "Looking Back to the Future", David looks back critically on the past 50 years while also trying to predict a future that has no traditional precedent for how to proceed. It traces the political, social, cultural, and aesthetic functions of art, using key political periods of social and cultural upheaval, such as 1945, 1968, and 1976/77. It has become an exhibition.

"This book attempts to present the political context for interpreting artistic activity in the late 20th century through a montage of images and documents from the immediate post-war period to the present. Materials dealt with here. The scope of is not an encyclopedia — it is a controversial attempt to isolate certain elements of artistic production and political endeavor that can serve as a reference for contemporary debates about the evolution of our society. From its distinct but interrelated territorial and linguistic realms, the book points to the complex cultural responses to the integration process of global modernization.” —From the text
