Other People ─ David Horvitz
An artist’s book examining mistaken identity, facial recognition and the ethical ambiguity of image databases in the age of AI.
Other People is an artist’s book by American artist David Horvitz. The book brings together a series of digital photographs that Horvitz collected online using facial-recognition software. By searching with images of his own face, he uncovered photographs of other people whom AI had incorrectly identified as him—in other words, false matches. These images also point to the ethical ambiguity of image databases in which photographs are collected and commercialised without the consent or awareness of those depicted.
The work is also informed by research into training materials used by East German border guards at Checkpoint Charlie, held in the Wende Museum, and explores the relationship between technology and identity in the age of AI.
