Not in Fashion: Photography and Fashion in the 90s

Kerber Verlag

Exhibition catalog for the exhibition of the same name held at the MMK (MUSEUM für Moderne Kunst) in Frankfurt, Germany from September 25, 2010 to January 9, 2011.

In this exhibition, MMK defines the 1990s as an era of individualism and self-defined style, and points out that fashion and photography were trying to find a personal and visual language to express this new lifestyle. The decade gave birth to a new generation that valued personal identity, individualism, and self-defined style, and a new concept of physicality was celebrated in major cities around the world, such as London, New York, Tokyo, Berlin, and Paris. They believed that they needed to overcome the overly artificial images of prêt-à-porter, haute couture, and glossy fashion magazines, and replace youth culture with "real life" photos. They tried to discard the concept of "collective beauty" and ignore gender differences and other social conventions. A wide range of programs, including approximately 200 photographic works, original documents, and live events, were exhibited and held at the venue, showcasing the development of fashion design, photography, and art through their mutual influence.

This book contains a wealth of photographs taken by photographers and designers in parallel with advertising campaigns of the 1990s, representative photo series from magazines of that era, essays, etc. It is a very meaningful resource to accompany this historical exhibition that summarizes fashion, fashion photography, and its culture in the 1990s.
