“2026.6.22 13:30–15:21” — Book Launch & IACK POP UP STORE
Friday 30 October – Tuesday 3 November 2026 (public holiday)
early spring gallery & shop

To celebrate IACK’s first publication, “2026.6.22 13:30–15:21”, we will hold a launch event and IACK POP UP STORE at early spring gallery & shop in Tokyo.

The book grew out of the exhibition “On the To-Come”, held in Aomori City from 16 May to 22 June 2026, initiated by Suguru Ryuzaki and Naohiro Utagawa and co-organised with Yukihito Kono. Occupying an entire vacant building that formerly housed a karaoke venue, the group exhibition brought together twelve artists – Kota Aigase, Yuko Amano, Aya Coizumi, Yukihito Kono, Shoko Masunaga, Sachie Noda, Suguru Ryuzaki, Ryuji Takahara, Ai Tanaka, Yuri Tsuiki, Naohiro Utagawa and Koji Yamaguchi – who presented work in a variety of forms in response to the question: “What if photography disappeared from the world?”

The book consists of stills from a video Kono shot on the exhibition’s final day. Neither a faithful record of the exhibition nor an attempt to idealise it in retrospect, it follows one person as they climb the building’s stairs to the top floor and then leave the venue. Through this movement, it captures the works alongside the distinctive structure and spaces of the building that housed them. Using images drawn from moving footage and the form of the book, it carries forward the exhibition’s concept while exploring the possibilities of the archive.

On Saturday 31 October, we will host a talk with Suguru Ryuzaki, Naohiro Utagawa and Yukihito Kono. That evening, there will be live performances by Kono, who also makes music, and Jon Collin, a British musician based in Sweden.

Kono will be at the gallery on Friday 30 October and Saturday 31 October. We look forward to welcoming you.

Suguru Ryuzaki
Born in 1983, Suguru Ryuzaki is a photographer based in Tokyo. He studied in the Department of Imaging Arts and Sciences at Musashino Art University’s College of Art and Design, leaving before graduating. Since the beginning of his practice, he has explored the affinity between photographs and letters, working primarily with black-and-white snapshots. His work brings together photography’s capacity to record and the sense of dialogue found in letters. He presents his work mainly through solo exhibitions and self-publishing, including a number of zines conceived as letters to family members.

Naohiro Utagawa
Born in 1981, Naohiro Utagawa graduated from Chuo University in 2004. His practice begins with interpretations of the question “How is it that I am able to make art?” as it arises in everyday life. By bringing together methods of making, the artist’s behaviour and daily life, he examines the many ways they interact. Working primarily with photography, he also uses everyday objects and a range of other materials.

Yukihito Kono
Born in 1989, Yukihito Kono lives in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture. He moved to the UK in 2011 and completed an MA in Fine Art Photography at London College of Communication, University of the Arts London. Having studied literature and art in different places, he makes work through subtle choices and a bold openness to chance. Rooted in the traditions of photography, his practice explores ideas across genres and eras. In 2017, he opened IACK in Kanazawa, a studio, gallery and bookshop founded on the idea of “an open study”.
