Our Favorite Books of 2021

There are only a few days left in 2021.

This year, the store owner has selected a collection of works that particularly caught his eye from among the titles he carries. As in previous years, the selections are made from a personal perspective, but he has also included comments, so we hope you will enjoy them in your free time at the end of the year.

SOUKHOS by Raphaël Barontini

Organized by LVMH Métiers d'Art"LVMH Métiers d'Art Training Program"It is produced every year as one of the results ofArt Book SeriesThis is a collection of works by French artist Raphaël Barontini, who was selected for the 2020 edition of ...Collection of works by other participating artistsThis program was held in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the artists and publishers to change their approach to creating a collection of works as an archive of the finished product and exhibition views. Despite the troubles and inconveniences caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the artists have overcome the situation by making the most of their creativity, resulting in a collection of works that gives a stronger sense of the artists' personalities than ever before.

The City And All It Holds by Roni Ahn

This is a self-published work by London-based photographer Roni Ahn. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ahn began to think about the importance of familiar presences and environments. Based on this idea, this book is composed of photographs that Ahn took during a visit to his hometown of Hong Kong. At first glance, it appears to be a work themed on young people and youth culture, but the main theme is friends, lovers, and the "relationships" between them and the locations where the photographs were taken, and each time you turn the page, you can imagine the story of each character. I think that the reason why the book focuses on young people is because this is a time when human relationships are particularly susceptible to change, and because they are fickle and delicate, close connections are important.

Archivist Addendum First Edition

This is the first collection of works by Archivist Addendum, a publishing project based in London. Unconstrained by conventional wisdom such as formats and seasons that are important in the world of fashion magazines, this work was created with the aim of exploring new possibilities for expression between standardized fashion editorials and difficult academic fields, and adopts a unique box-shaped format containing a variety of materials. I thought it was an ambitious work that gave a sense of the possibilities of a new field, not only between fashion editorials and academia, but also between fashion magazines and artist books.

Installation View: Photography Exhibitions In Australia (1848-2020)

What kind of view of the history of photography emerges by focusing on the exhibition (installation) as a form of photographic expression? This is a book that was produced based on such an idea. It introduces various exhibitions, both famous and unknown, and the activities of independent galleries from the painting era to the present day, and you will be amazed at the very rich history of photography in Australia. The book is not selling well because of its rather serious content, but it is also rich in illustrations, so I think it is a must-have book for anyone interested in photography or involved in photographic expression.

Japan Works by Aglaia Konrad

The Austrian artist held a series of events at IACK, both in-store and online, from September to November this year.Aglaia ConradA collection of works by.articleI've written extensively about it here, so I won't go into detail here, but the content of the work is of course important, and the publisher's skill in beautifully reflecting the author's context and creative process in the book is also noteworthy. I also think it's interesting to see how perspectives change dramatically depending on the cultural sphere and region where the reader lives. If you haven't seen it yet, be sure to check it out this holiday season.

Choreography with Potatoes and Flour by Line Bøhmer Løkken

Artist-run publishers in Norway,"Multipress"Photographer who organized theLeena Bama LokkenThe latest work by Lokken. Using a photograph of Lokken's father, a baker, kneading dough, the photograph is stretched, folded, and unfolded in various sizes, just like dough. The characteristics of the medium of photography, which can be freely printed based on negatives and data, and the properties of dough are lightly layered and expressed. The technique of combining paper of various sizes is not uncommon, but in this book the content and form of the work match perfectly, and I thought it was good that the design is not too dominant and is used naturally as an expressive technique. This book was particularly well received in stores where customers could hold the actual book in their hands.

Somersault by Raymond Meeks

In this day and age, when many collections of artworks are produced that are visually and tactilely entertaining, like pop-up picture books, the traditional and smallest unit of expression in a collection is the "Sequence"This is the latest work by photographer Raymond Meeks, who stoically pursues the concept of "photography." The sharply honed sequences are of course impressive, but the use of calm matte paper and French fold (a type of bookbinding) effectively expresses the artist's gentle gaze directed at the subject. The color photographs of flowers that are suddenly inserted into the predominantly black-and-white composition also function very effectively as accents, reminding us that there is still much potential in a collection of works with a simple composition.

Nice by Mark Peckmezian

Berlin-based Canadian photographer Mark Baekmejian's first book features 117 works selected from over 500 portraits taken during his travels over the past five years. Unlike the portrait photography seen in recent years, Baekmejian focuses on the function of human facial expressions as a medium of communication. In that respect, his portraits are very orthodox, but the richness of the subjects' ethnicity and vague framework naturally give them a contemporary feel. In addition, although his shooting style places the face in the entire frame, he pays close attention to even the background that is slightly visible, and the technical aspects of this are also worth seeing. He is one of the artists whose future activities will be watched with interest, whether he will continue shooting in the same style or make a leap in his expressiveness as an artist.

Polder Viii, Tuindorp Oostzaan, Amsterdam 1920 - 2020 by Raimond Wouda

The garden village "Twindorp-Oostzaan" was built in the north of Amsterdam in 1921 to address population problems and improve the living conditions of working-class citizens. This book is a collection of photographs taken by the author, who has lived there since his grandparents' generation, to explore the history and his own roots. The style of documentary/journalism that unfolds while interweaving materials has now become a well-established format, but this book seems to explore a slightly different expression method (although it's a bit difficult to put into words...). This is a book worth reading, especially now that there are undoubtedly more opportunities to be conscious of the living and working environment. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the construction of "Twindorp Oostzaan".

PLAY by Philippe Jarrigeon

This is the first collection of works by French photographer Philippe Jarrigeon in his 15th year of career. It includes a selection of personal and editorial work in various genres that Jarrigeon has shot so far, as well as unpublished cuts, reconstructed from those. The central theme is how images are created and how society and people are affected by images, but the humorous photos are a lot of fun to look at, regardless of the details. And it is quite different from what you might think is simply a compilation of representative works. It is edited with a strong awareness of presenting the work in the format of a book. The arrangement of meticulously staged photographs, still lifes, and landscapes shakes the boundary between reality and created images, and the characteristic of finding mysterious parts that you might miss but will find if you look closely is almost like expressing the world we live in itself.
