ドイツ人写真家、ミヒャエル・シュミットによる作品集。1933年以降にドイツで主流となっていた社会システム ─ 国家社会主義、社会主義、民主主義 ─ の歴史と普遍的なシンボリズムに関心を抱いていたシュミットは、再統一後のドイツで本作の制作に着手した。このような背景から、本作は社会における個人の決定的な役割と、自分の立場を選択することについての問題提起を行っている。シュミットの目には、世に出版された写真は客観的な現実の不可欠な一部であり、人間や建物と同じように撮影される権利があると映っていた。本作ではこの考えをさらに発展させており、作品群の約3分の1を占める写真の写真は大きくトリミングされ、時には反転された写真に加えて既存の写真素材をそのまま使用しており、それらを自身の写真と組み合わせている。その際シュミットは、元の写真の内容を自らの構想に合うように書き換え、写真の持つ曖昧さを取り除き、さらに解釈のレイヤーを追加する。また、彼の初期の作品に見られるようにモチーフの反復や変化の手法を用いて配置された写真は、特殊な視覚的イディオムの文法を構成している。従来の写真に接する習慣を持つ鑑賞者は、一挙に読み解くことを拒むイメージに最初は戸惑うが、やがて集合知に基づく個人的、連想的な視点から本作を理解するだろう。初版は1996年のにニューヨーク近代美術館、ハノーファーのシュプレンゲル美術館、ドレスデンのアルベルティヌムを巡回した展覧会と、同年にロンドンのフォトグラファーズ・ギャラリーで開催された回顧展に伴い「SCALO」から刊行。本作は、2022年に復刻版（第二版）としてタイトルをドイツ語にあらため、「Walther König」より出版された。-Title: EIN-HEIT (U-NI-TY) Artist: Michael SchmidtWalther König, 2022Hardcover book with an insert, case binding265 x 192 x 33 mm   316 pagesGerman editionText in German and English¥11,000 -
