Workbooks by Nigel Shafran

A collection of works by British photographer Nigel Shafran.

Even before he began his career as a photographer, Nigel Shafran routinely produced "workbooks" in which he wrote down ideas and pasted in photographs. This book introduces Shafran's life and world of work through the workbooks he collected, imagined, sketched, and recorded between 1984 and 2024. Generally, such notebooks are seen as a process leading up to the creation of a work, but looking at this book, it is clear that each work is not completely independent, but rather that everything is part of a process. Linda van Deursen's playful design elevates this book from a "fan book" to one that will appeal to readers who are seeing Shafran's work for the first time.
