What They Saw: Historical Photobooks By Women, 1843-1999
This is a collection of works edited by Olga Yatskevich and Russet Lederman, co-founders of 10×10 Photobooks, a non-profit organization established in 2012 with the aim of deepening engagement with the global photobook community through the appreciation, dissemination, and understanding of photobooks.
This book is an anthology of the history of photobooks produced by women photographers, interpreting the concept of the photobook in the broadest possible sense from multiple geographical and ethnic perspectives, from classic bound volumes and portfolios to unpublished works, zines, and scrapbooks. It covers a wide range of works, from well-known publications such as Germaine Krull's Metal (1928) and Diane Arbus's Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph (1972) to lesser known collections such as Eslanda Cardozo Goode Robeson's African Journey (1945) and Eiko Yamazawa's Far and Near (1962), while also noting significant gaps and omissions in the access, support, and funding of photobooks, especially for non-Western women and women of color.
Winner of the 2021 Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards - the Photography Catalogue of the Year Prize.
First edition of 2,000 copies.
