The Grand Tour by Kasia Klimpel
A collection of works by Polish photographer and artist Kasia Klimpel.
This book is about the SwissMauvoisin DamIt was published in conjunction with the exhibition "The Grand Tour" held at the Musée de Bagne in Paris. Klimpel explains that this project is a "travelogue through the world of maps" that gives new meaning to the concept of the Grand Tour. The Grand Tour was a large-scale graduation trip taken by students and tutors from the British aristocracy from the 17th to 19th centuries, and philosophers such as Thomas Hobbes and Adam Smith once accompanied them as chaperones. Inspired by a photo of the word "horizon" that he found in an Internet image search, Klimpel created fantastical "landscape" photographs using natural light to photograph layers of paper. These landscapes were given titles that described the fictitious exact date and coordinates of the place where the photographs were supposedly taken, and the photographs were then submitted to Google Maps through "Panoramio (a free posting and sharing site with local information operated by Google)". Panoramio has a policy of not posting non-existent photographs, but some of the photographs were posted to various places around the world and actually registered on Google Maps.
