Since 2009, Van Keulen has continuously visited several individuals in France, the United States, and Japan who, for different reasons, chose to set aside our strongly economised and de-spiritualized world. The lack of people in the living spaces shown in Stick Holding Branch changes the focus of the photos from being just a record of reality to becoming images that exist outside of time and place. Accompanied by an extensive selection of correspondence and fragments of personal notes, Van Keulen’s work shows an intimate portrait of a global community redeemed from society’s demanding expectations.
