(Signed) Hattfabriken/Luckenwalde by Gerry Johansson
A collection of works by Swedish photographer Gerry Johansson.
This book was published in conjunction with the exhibition "MOMENT" held at the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm, Sweden in September 2012. The project Luckenwalde, included in this book, started in 1986 with a portrait of Swedish painter Dick Bengtsson. In the late 60s, Bengtsson produced a series of paintings that expanded on the works of Edward Hopper and Piet Mondrian. The swastika mark on these works provoked a lengthy and emotional debate, and also led to physical attacks on his work. One of Bengtsson's most important works of this period is the two-part work The Hat and the Hat Factory (1969). This work is based on a black-and-white photograph of a modernist factory built by architect Erich Mendelsohn in the industrial city of Luckenwalde, south of Berlin. The design of this building is unique in the history of architecture, and above all, it is considered a fantastic structure in the tradition of Cubism. Built by the Jewish Hermann and Steinberg families from 1921 to 1923, Luckenwalde's "Hatfabrik Friedrich Steinberg Hermann & Co." It was the first industrial building built of reinforced concrete and has a long and dramatic history. Sold to the Nazi regime in 1934, production of anti-aircraft guns began. In 1945-56 it became a repair shop for the Soviet Army, and since the early 2000s the factory has been rebuilt and restored. Johansson captured the details of the buildings and places and buildings he found walking around the city that reflected the factory's history and turbulent times from the 1920s to the present day. Also included is a text explaining the background of Bengtsson's artistry by Cecilia Widenheim, director of the Malmö Museum.
