Oobanken by Jerome Ming
A collection of works by South African photographer Jerome Ming.
Ming was born in London and grew up in Zambia and Malawi in East Africa, before returning to the UK and studying fine art at Nottingham Trent University. He is currently based in South Africa. This work was created during a stay in Yagon, Myanmar, and the title "Oobanken" is taken from the Oobanken, a wild bird of the cuckoo family that inhabits Southeast and South Asia. Through Ming's perspective and lens, the scenes and objects of daily life there are transformed into unrealistic images that are somewhat like a dream world. The surrealism is reminiscent of modernist photography of the past, but the way the works are presented is extremely modern in that they are conscious of the narrative (flow), and above all, the beauty of the light and gray tones that overflow in the monochrome world makes this a memorable book.
