Notebooks 1967-70 by Lee Lozano

Primary Information

A collection of works by American artist Lee Lozano.

Lozano is a mysterious artist who produced a diverse body of painting and conceptual work. Though prolific, her active years were limited to the early 1960s and early 1970s, when she lived in New York. Until her decision to leave the art world in 1972, she actively worked with other artists in New York, but much of her work was largely hidden from the public until recent years. Although Lozano did not actively participate in the commercial art world for 30 years until her death, after boycotting the art world, she was consistently working in a conceptual field.

This book is a compilation of three notebooks that Lozano wrote between 1967 and 1970, and contains drawings for paintings, including her seminal series Language Pieces and 12 studies for her signature 11-panel Wave Series. Notes and sketches related to her abstract paintings are also included, as well as her texts, known as Language Pieces. Lozano considered each page of her notebooks a drawing, which was sometimes removed from the notebooks and exhibited. 25 years ago, the notebooks were reproduced on a photocopier, forming the basis of this book.
