Nasser Road / Political Posters in Uganda

The Eriskay Connection

This is a collection of works edited by Christoph Tayteca, professor of international development at the Institute for Development Policy Studies (IOB), University of Antwerp, and a researcher of conflict and governance in Central and East Africa.

Kampala's Nasser Road is nicknamed the Silicon Valley of Uganda. The street is a mythical place known as a center of printing and fraud. You can make or buy anything here, from fake IDs to university degrees. This book focuses on one of the main products: posters and calendars that portray politicians and celebrities as superheroes. Saddam Hussein, Osama bin Laden, and Mohammed Gaddafi are transformed into Robocop and ready for battle. The artworks are decorative and political at the same time, telling the story of the struggle of ordinary people against the forces of Western imperialism and celebrating international villains as antiheroes. Nasser Road is a collage of works by local designers and prints that the author has collected since he became interested in this unique history 20 years ago, and about which he has written an extensive analysis.
