A photobook by British photographer Rosie Marks.

Belmond is collaborating with some of the world’s leading contemporary photographers to produce a collectable library of books, pairing each artist with one of its hotels in a collection of images that reflect each unique destination. For this volume, Rosie Marks photographed Cape Town’s Mount Nelson in spring 2023 and winter 2024.

Marks remembers seeing Mount Nelson’s iconic pink walls as a child on a family trip to South Africa. Years later, in this book, she captures the hotel’s rooms, grounds and inhabitants with nostalgia, personal connection and her idiosyncratic sense of humour. She was particularly drawn to Mount Nelson’s employees – staff members who have worked at the hotel for decades, peering proudly out of windows and offices, their portraits offering a glimpse into daily life. Marks explains that she was fascinated by the rhythms of housekeeping, overlapping with ritual and community. Morning briefings often end with a collective prayer and song, marking the start of the day. Her photographs are as much about the people she’s capturing as they are about herself – revealing what she finds funny, extraordinary and unique, and charting the human quirks we often overlook.
