Mittelland by Michael Blaser
A collection of works by Swiss photographer Michael Blaser.
"Das Mittelland is a landscape of buildings, oscillating between nature and city. A world full of intersections and grey areas, city and countryside, nature and development, public and private spaces all blend together. Is the Midland just a metropolitan area? Michael Blaser grew up in the suburbs, which is probably why he is interested in their uniqueness. He does not take landscape or architectural photographs. His photographs are social documents. In his search for a modern and urban identity, he has not yet been able to escape from his provincial image. People do not appear in Blaser's photographs, but their presence is still strongly felt. The sober facades suggest the inner world of the buildings and their inhabitants. The strict compositions and the lack of people in the photographs give off an uneasy silence. A strange melancholy pervades the work. Behind the seemingly formal and ordinary expressions, the observer senses a narrative moment, a bittersweet poetry of everyday life."
