Milky Way by Vincent Ferrané

Libraryman

A collection of works by French photographer Vincent Ferrané.

This work is composed of photographs of the artist's wife breastfeeding their child, and the beauty of the work is expressed through the geometric arrangement of the body and space laid out in the work. The images in this book contain repetitions of breastfeeding scenes in traditional paintings, while also incorporating modern expressions, creating an interaction between them. These everyday scenes highlight the strength of breast milk, along with the intense yet tender exchange between two living beings, mother and child, and the flowing breast milk is reminiscent of the Milky Way in Greek mythology.

(Excerpt from distributor's commentary)

The photographs, taken with a strong flash reminiscent of Jurgen Teller, evoke the image of feature photos in lifestyle or culture magazines rather than emphasizing the rawness of child-rearing. However, what is actually depicted is contrary to the idealized superficial image, and shows child-rearing as a battle in a sense. This is a book that not only generates empathy, but also highlights the unconscious gaze towards women through such contradictions in expression.
