Manifesta 9. The Deep of the Modern: A Subcyclopaedia
Exhibition catalogue published to coincide with the 9th Manifesta contemporary art biennial, held in Genk and Limburg, Belgium from June 2nd to September 30th, 2012.
Manifesta is a biennale whose greatest feature is that it changes venue every two years, and it continues to explore the possibilities of an experimental biennale, focusing on publishing new material and educational programs each time.
This ninth edition of the series curates artworks, concepts and stories that invite readers to reconsider the role of culture in industrial and post-industrial societies. In an encyclopedic format, the book builds an interdisciplinary dialogue between art history, cultural heritage and different layers of contemporary cultural production. It also raises questions about the enduring significance of material production in contemporary art and the impact of coal, the fossil fuel that powered the Industrial Revolution, on the history of contemporary art.
