Index G by Piergiorgio Casotti & Emanuele Brutti

Skinnerboox

A collection of works by Italian photographers Piergiorgio Casotti and Emanuele Brutti.

"Index G" refers to the Gini Index, a statistical measure of inequality devised by Italian statistician Corrado Gini in 1936 and also used as an index to measure residential segregation. In recent years, racial discrimination in American cities appears to have decreased, but in reality, inequality and discrimination have simply shifted from differences between neighborhoods to a more macro level of central cities, suburbs, and peripheral areas. For example, in St. Louis, Missouri, zip code segregation is evident, with 95% of residents north of Delmarre being black and having an average life expectancy of 67 years, while 70% of residents south of Delmarre being white and having an average life expectancy of 82 years.

The book is structured like a silent play, without any intervening commentary or text, so as to subtly hint at the reality lurking behind everyday scenes.

Limited to 650 copies.
