I Long To Meet The Masses Once Again by Walid Raad
A collection of works by Lebanese artist Walid Raad.
St. Peter's Church is a church in Cologne where Peter Paul Rubens, one of the leading Dutch painters, lived until he was ten years old. Rubens' late masterpiece "The Martyrdom of St. Peter" produced in 1636 was commissioned for the altarpiece of this church, and in 1642, two years after Rubens' death, this adorned over the grave of his father, who was buried in the church. "Replace Rubens" by German artists Gerhard Richter, Walid Raad, British artist Liam Gillick, and American artist Kara Walker, 2020 This is a series of exhibitions held in the church in order from 2020 to 2021. This exhibition was a project in which Rubens' works, which had left an impression on the space for a long time, were taken down from the walls, and each artist exhibited works that replaced them while feeling the presence of their absence. Lard, the second artist to be convened after Richter, is based on the idea that works of art are not immutable, but rather metamorphic, changing their meaning and form during cultural and physical transitions. , In 2019, two sculptures "I Long To Meet The Masses Once Again" made of wooden boxes for transporting works of art were installed on the floor, and flowers and leaves were decorated on the back of "The Martyrdom of St. Peter". The printed work, "I Long To Meet The Masses Once More," was displayed on the wall just below where the original painting was hung. This book contains the installation scenery along with texts by three artists including Lard.
