Future Estate by Matthew Harvey
A photobook by photographer, writer, and book producer Matthew Harvey.
Between 2018 and 2024, during an extended period of travel, Harvey extensively documented the contexts of interconnected ecologies and infrastructures undergoing transformation through large-scale capital investment. While regularly working in offset printing plants across East Asia, Europe, and North America, he became drawn to the contingent and chaotic worlds unfolding along the extended peripheries of industrial production.
All images were shot on 35mm consumer-grade film and developed, whenever possible, at one-hour labs in the locations where they were taken. The resulting variations in processing, scanning methods, and human error have produced a wide range of image qualities and colour palettes—visual relics from a time when the everyday image was intensively materialised and mass-produced.
In addition to 184 such images, the book features autobiographical reflections, field notes, and an essay by AbdouMaliq Simone. Together, they examine how places are structured—and destabilised—by commodity production, the geopolitics of development, and the uneven practices of zoning, exploitation, and transnational investment that shape global labour and distribution.
