Hannie Long and Prue Stent have been working together for the past decade, working across photography, video, performance, installation and sculpture. Their work is rooted in experimentation between the body, materials and environment, creating spaces that weave the animate and the inanimate, the human and the other. "We see the body as a microcosm and are constantly exploring the environment to find moments, processes and formations that reflect emotions or speak to the body in some way. We try to find the intersections where the outside world and our inner worlds overlap," the duo explain. The body is ever-present throughout the works, whether literally through theatrical interactions or metaphorically appearing in the leaky eyes of a rock pool, the pulsating lips of a sea creature or the tingling tentacles of a sea anemone. "From the micro-worlds we explore – gardens, rock pools and ponds – hybrid creatures and uncanny moments emerge that speak to desire, fantasy and the urge to see ourselves reflected in the natural world." Often referencing historical representations of women, Long and Stent distort and fragment their own bodies to create living hybrids in a constant state of change and flux.
