A collection of essays edited by American artist Tom Lloyd.

Published in 1971, the book was originally thought to be a critical response to the Contemporary Black Artists in America exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. As he points out, it was not a mere criticism, but developed into "a clear affirmation of black art philosophy as interpreted by eight black artists."

This book is a reprint produced to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the original publication and is written by Lloyd, Amiri Baraka, Bing Davis, and Melvin Dixon. , Jeff Donaldson, Ray Elkins, Babatunde Folayemi, Francis and Val Gray Ward.
