Andean Explorer by Colin Dodgson
A photobook by American photographer Colin Dodgson.
Invited by Belmond, Dodgson embarked on a journey aboard the Andean Explorer, a luxury train that travels through the Peruvian Andes from Cusco to Arequipa. Along the way, he captured the atmosphere of the trip with quiet sensitivity―ranging from majestic landscapes to the smallest details of everyday life. Iconic locations such as Lake Titicaca, the Colca Canyon, and the La Raya market also appear throughout the book.
Working with film and printing each image himself in the darkroom, Dodgson brings a warm, delicate light and a twilight-toned palette to his photographs. Influenced by painting, his eye turns not only to sweeping vistas but also to everyday objects―gnarled potatoes grown at 4,200 meters, stones, plastic bottles, and curious items found at a market set up along the train tracks. These humble subjects are quietly elevated through his lens.
Rather than documenting the journey in a conventional sense, Dodgson seeks to capture its essence and fleeting impressions. His intuitive and experimental approach resonates with the spirit of Belmond’s limited-edition book series, which invites artists to move beyond representation and offer a singular, poetic vision of place.
