A Hundred Summers, A Hundred Winters by Bertien van Manen

De Verbeelding

A photo book by Dutch photographer Bertien van Manen.

This book includes photographs taken during repeated visits to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Rostov, Odessa, Tomsk, Sibiria, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Moldavia, and Georgia between 1991 and 1994. Van Manen was one of the first photographers to enter these countries after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and while taking the time to learn Russian for this project, he photographed the people he met and became close to, conveying the daily life and richness of countries that were shrouded in mystery at the time. Van Manen's photographs place emphasis on interactions with individuals, rather than on larger issues such as society or countries, and the gazes of the subjects in his photographs allow us to sense the presence of Van Manen, who spent time with them.
