(Signed) Landscape Manual II by Yukihito Kono
An artist book by Japanese photographer Kono Yukito.
"Landscape Manual" is an installation work that attempts to allow viewers to freely connect fragmented images to create their own unique landscapes. This book is a sequel to "Landscape Manual," a sculptural artist book/catalog that was self-published in June 2024 after a solo exhibition held at IACK in April of the same year. However, although it is a sequel, it is not a work that updates the works included with the same subject matter. This work uses the same photos, paper, and layout as the previous work, but by changing the specifications, it has been transformed into a completely different work. The folding element that was characteristic of the previous work has disappeared, and Kono has cut the photos with a cutter while keeping the A5 size format.
Each of the 50 copies produced will literally stand up like a pop-up book, revealing the physical space and depth that exists within the collection behind the cut-out images. Unlike his previous work, which encouraged viewers to view the books in pieces or standing them up, this book has been hand-stitched with thread by the artist. Kono's forte is the use of difference and chance born from repetition, and this work effortlessly reveals how subtle changes can bring about major changes in an image and its reception.
