The New Woman's Survival Catalog by Kirsten Grimstad and Susan Rennie

Primary Information

A feminist book edited and published by Kirsten Grimstad and Susan Rennie in 1973. As stated in the preface, The New Woman's Survival Catalog is "an active attempt to reconstruct culture by changing values and attitudes," and is a book that gives a sense of the development of the second wave feminist movement.

Produced by Grimstad and Renee in just five months, the book is strongly in the style of Stewart Brand's seminal subcultural magazine, Whole Earth Catalog, and attempts to map the vast network of feminist alternative cultural activism in the 1970s. Grimstad and Renee embarked on a two-month road trip in the summer of 1973 to meet and interview all the organizations and individuals featured, and to gather further references and information to complete the book.

The book offers important insight into national feminist movements and activities during the Women's Liberation Movement, from arts organizations to bookstores, independent publishers, health, child care, rape crisis centers, and educational, legal, and financial resources. Presented like a sales catalog, it features a listing list, organizational descriptions, articles, extensive illustrations, and a "Making a Book" section detailing the production of the publication.

Kirsten Grimstad and Susan Renee are co-editors of The New Woman's Survival Catalog and The New Woman's Survival Sourcebook, and co-founders of Chrysalis: A Magazine of Women's Culture, published out of the Woman's Building in downtown Los Angeles from 1977 to 1981.
