Stasis II ─ Trine Søndergaard
An artist’s book exploring stillness, introspection and the suspension of time through layered photographic worlds.
Stasis II is a photobook by Danish artist Trine Søndergaard, bringing together three series centred on stillness and introspection. Across Søndergaard’s photographs, different historical periods and material registers intersect: contemporary women wearing historical dresses and head coverings, girls in modern clothing adorned with eighteenth-century gold-embroidered bonnets, and striking interior views of uninhabited Danish manor houses. By bringing these images into relation, Søndergaard constructs a distinctive world that belongs neither fully to past nor present, neither to fact nor fiction.
This second edition features a new cover and revised layout, and includes three new works in addition to all the photographs from the first edition. The original edition was selected by Stiftung Buchkunst as one of the Most Beautiful German Books in the World, and was described as follows: “Paper, print quality, and impeccable binding convey the meditative atmosphere of the images, drawing the viewer in and gently releasing them again. Condensed time. Eternity. A magical book.” Stasis II also retains the substantial essay by the internationally renowned cultural theorist Mieke Bal, offering a rich and multifaceted reading of Søndergaard’s work.
Second edition of 1,000 copies.
