(Signed) Witnesses of an Event by Mariken Kramer
An artist book by Norwegian artist Mariken Krame.
"The artist book, Witnesses of an Event, is a bellows-style book housed in a custom-made box. It contains still life photographs of stones, images of clouds, and poetic texts. Collected from a gravel pit at the foot of Hardangervidda National Park in Norway, the stones caught my eye because they lay exposed and "unprotected" after being excavated with intricate line drawings and band-like scars. Stones hold wisdom from an age beyond human understanding. They hold stories of deep time, speaking of forces we can barely grasp. Written from the point of view of the stones, the text "Here I Am" narrates the journey of the formation and transformation of stones, bearing witness to the intensely evolving forces of the Earth. The accordion structure of the book evokes continuity, reflecting the fluid and uninterrupted flow of time. Together, the photographs and text present stones as enduring witnesses to the forces that shape earth and life, evoking the timeless rhythms of the Earth and the profound stories it holds. As such, stones embody a sense of existential stability, a silent resistance to a world in constant crisis." - Mariken Crame
