(Signed) Dark Rooms by Nigel Shafran
A photobook by British photographer Nigel Shafran.
Dark Rooms brings together five series of works, primarily focusing on previously unpublished material by Shafran. Featured are Supermarket checkouts, capturing items gliding along supermarket conveyor belts; Paddington escalators, a study of people descending escalators, viewed in profile; Mobility shops, documenting the quiet melancholy of stores selling mobility aids; Mother’s work, recording the creative output of the artist’s mother at home; and Packages, portraying empty containers gradually accumulating in the kitchen. Though thematically distinct, the inclusion of domestic scenes at key intervals creates a quietly unfolding sense of time that runs through the book.
At first glance, these series may appear unrelated, but through careful editing they cohere into a single body of work—one that subtly illuminates the poetry of the everyday and the quiet gaze of observation.
Designed by Dutch design duo Mevis & Van Deursen.
Signed copy with a hand drawing of "Paddington escalators," by the artist.
