Be Like Water by Anouk Kruithof
A collection of works by Dutch artist Anouk Kruithof.
Anouk Kruithof settled in Mexico City after living in New York from 2011 to 2015. She currently divides her time between Belgium, the Netherlands and a wooden house in Botopasi, in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, where she creates a multi-layered, interdisciplinary work that encompasses photography, sculpture, installation, photomontage, artist books, text, performance, video and interventions in the public domain.
This book is the first comprehensive monograph to bring together Kruithof's body of work produced over more than 20 years (2002-2023). Exploring and reinventing photography and sculpture, Kruithof has placed the interaction, collaboration and relationship between people and their (natural and technological) environments at the core of her practice, resulting in work that is both liberating and disturbing. Comprised of both text and visuals, Be Like Water aims to highlight the fluidity of her work and her practice. By combining and mixing works in an anti-chronological and anti-thematic way, Kruithof presents a new and evolving narrative that weaves complexity and multifacetedness with joy and playfulness, while at the same time leaving room for critical reinterpretation.
This is the first comprehensive monograph by an artist who has explored the state of photography and images in the post-Internet era, sometimes through installation, sometimes sculpture, and sometimes performance. It is the definitive work for understanding the breadth of contemporary photographic expression.
