Unfortunately Last Sunday Afternoon Somebody Left The Door Open...

Museum Het Domein, Sittard/the Fine Art Department/Jan Van Eyck Academie, Maastricht

Exhibition catalogue produced to accompany the exhibition held at the Sittard Domain Art Museum in the Netherlands from June 27th to August 20th, 2000, in collaboration with the Jan Van Eyck Academie, a post-academic institute for research and production in the fields of fine arts, design and art theory based in Maastricht, the Netherlands, and the KSA:K Center for Contemporary art in Moldova.

Based on the idea of clarifying and reversing the inside and outside of institutionalized museums and institutions, this extremely unique catalogue/documentary is a compilation of various internal documents and records, including minutes of meetings related to this exhibition.

"As the 20th century draws to a close, young artists are seeking new paradigm shifts in their practice, but the institutionalized art world, which produces, presents, and distributes artworks, is unable to keep up with these trends.Institutions like the Jan Van Eyck Academie and KSA:K, which are situated in political and geographical centers and in the artistic mainstream, each in their own way try to provide the right environment for new artistic ideas, discussions and experiments, but are well aware of the fact that they will never succeed unless the institutions themselves constantly question their own legitimacy. The seemingly innocent title of Someone Left the Door Open became a useful parameter to audit the institution and reveal new elements in the artistic process, resulting in an exhibition and publication with a clear 'inside and outside'. - Excerpt from the preface of this book
