Vernal Equinox by Suzuki Sean Shosuke

BY ONE PRESS

A zine by artist Suzuki Sean Shosuke.

"Vernal Equinox" is the first chapter of "equinox", a short film that captures the vernal and autumnal equinoxes―two moments each year when day and night are nearly equal in length. For this project, Suzuki invited French artist Audrey Fondecarve to contribute a poem and reading on the theme of spring and commissioned a musical piece from Kanazawa-based photographer Yukihito Kono.

This zine presents a more fragmented take on the world of the film. A printed QR code provides early access to the full video work.

“Twice a year, at the beginning of spring and autumn, the sun rises due east and sets due west. Day and night are almost equal in length, and light and darkness are in balance. These celestial movements prompt me to turn my attention back to my inner centre. I pause, quiet my thoughts, and take time to observe what is right in front of me.

The entire film was shot using a 16 mm camera. Each roll only allows for about three minutes of footage, which forces me to confront what truly draws me in―what I am curious about and want to document. I turn the camera like jotting down a note, burning fleeting moments onto film frame by frame.” (Excerpt from the artist’s statement)
