A collection of works by Japanese photographer Rinko Kawauchi.

Ten years after the simultaneous publication of "Utatane," "Hanabi," and "Hanako," this work was produced as a work that elevated the world of "Utatane" to even greater heights. The title "Illuminance" refers to the psychological amount of brightness felt by humans that illuminates a flat surface. Kawauchi sees this as the fundamental theme of photography, and has compiled the photos he has taken over the course of 15 years with "light" as his theme into a book. At first glance, it appears to be a collection of photogenic scenes that sparkle in "ordinary everyday life," but what is noteworthy about this book is the author's gaze that captures the countless scenes of the end that lurk in such everyday life, and his attitude of capturing all events without discrimination on a square screen. The end comes suddenly, but the daily lives of the living continue. By delicately weaving together disparate motifs, Kawauchi has depicted in a single photo book a scene that condenses the beauty and sadness of this world.

This 10th anniversary edition of the book retains the structure of the first edition, but is based on the Dutch"fw:books"Hans Gremen, artistic director of The book has been given a new cover by Gremmen, and features a reprint of a text by David Chandler, as well as new contributions from philosopher Masatake Shinohara and Lesley A. Martin, creative director at Aperture. Martin adds a commentary.
