I on the Road / Weather Camera Self-Portraits by Tatu Gustafsson
An artist book by Finnish artist Tatu Gustafsson.
This debut publication by Tatu Gustafsson presents 200 self-portraits captured not by the artist’s own hand but by Finland’s automated weather and traffic cameras. When Gustafsson began this project in 2012, he was searching for alternative ways of making images—challenging conventional ideas of authorship and control in photography.
After discovering that Finnish weather cameras take photographs every 12 minutes and store them online for 24 hours, Gustafsson began travelling across the country, placing himself in front of these cameras. The resulting images are eerie, poetic reflections on solitude and presence—haunting portraits of a figure adrift in vast, often empty landscapes.
Relying on over 700 roadside cameras scattered across Finland, the artist embraced the unpredictability of the process. For one week each month, Gustafsson lived out of his car, becoming a fleeting, spectral figure captured in the automated gaze of the weather cams.
