A collection of works by Japanese photographer Avalos Murano Atsuko.

About two hours by train from Paris, the Alsace region, which stretches along the Rhine in northeastern France, is known for its beautiful scenery and wine production, surrounded by mountains and rivers. In addition, the Alsace region has a lot of wetlands, so the stork with a red beak, the white stork, is the most abundant in France. After traveling to France in 2019 with Paris as their destination, the Avalos visited the Alsace region during their free time. However, it was late autumn, and the storks had already finished raising their young and had already migrated to the warm African continent to spend a more comfortable winter, and all they saw in Alsace was an empty nest. This book contains photographs of "empty" stork nests that the author found in various parts of the city.

"The main purpose of my trip two years ago was Paris, but I had time to go to other cities, so my husband and I decided to go to Alsace. Alsace. In rural areas, the stork folklore is famous."Why didn't you come to our couple's place?"We talked on the train if we could complain if we found a stork. Storks raise their young in Europe from spring to autumn, and migrate to the warm continent of Africa in autumn and winter. It was only after arriving in Alsace in late autumn that I learned that we were in an empty nest without a master. The empty nest told me many things and threw things at me, and it touched my heart. It seems that the sky has a mysterious power.

In Sanskrit, the etymology of emptiness is used when something like 'there is no one at home', and it seems to mean 'a state of lacking something expected'. It occurred to me that the camera itself was also empty inside. As can be seen from the principle of the camera obscura, considering the basic structure, the inside is hollow, equivalent to an empty box. A dark space opens when an empty box moves toward a target with intention. Then, the surface image is taken in with the light, and the photograph is born. The world that was affirmed by grasping the "empty" that was lacking in expectation but not nothingness began to look bright and clear. - Atsuko Murano
