An artist book by French visual artist Noémie Goudal.

In this work, Goudal draws inspiration from a theory developed in the field of geology to explain the formation of mountains. The question of whether mathematical principles could explain natural forms fascinated scientists in particular. This series explores that question from a unique perspective. We are accustomed to perceiving landscapes as static, fixed entities, but in reality, they are in constant motion. Even the seemingly immobile presence of massive rocks is subject to ongoing geological processes of transformation.

Goudal photographed a mountain, printed the image on water-soluble paper (a material that dissolves on contact with water), mounted it onto a transparent sheet, and cut along the mountain’s edges to create a nearly two-metre-wide replica. She then placed this cutout in front of a different mountain—in front of a real landscape. Through the effect of perspective, the reduced-scale replica blends seamlessly into its surroundings.
