Akina Books

A collection of works by Italian photographer Simone Sapienza.

April 30, 1975, North Vietnamese tanks pass through the gates of the Presidential Palace in Saigon, marking the end of the war with the brutal US forces and the beginning of a new era of independence from Western regimes. I told you. More than 40 years have passed since then, and while the free economy is on the rise in Vietnam, the one-party dictatorship of the Communist Party of Vietnam wielded uncontestable power even after the war, and lost hope as a democratic and free country. Through a series of metaphorical perspectives, this book presents a Hollywood-esque picture of post-war Vietnam in turmoil, created by the polar opposite of reality. Even after becoming independent, history continues to repeat itself while staring at the West.

In fact, according to the Pew Global Poll*, 95 percent of Vietnamese would rather live under capitalism, even with inequality. With a young, dynamic and large population, the country is likely to become one of the fastest growing economies in the world in the coming years. Asia's next tiger wants to ride the wave of economic freedom, albeit under undisputed order and control.
