A visual archive by APIAN, a DIY humanities research project led by artist Aladin Borioli.

Since the invention of the modern beehive in 1852, its structure has remained largely unchanged. While the standardised box-shaped hive brought stability to beekeeping, it also marked a departure from the structural diversity cultivated over the past 4,400 years. This compact volume serves as a small archive, tracing the history of pre-industrial beekeeping practices back to 2400 B.C.E.

Through 375 photographs and illustrations, the book reveals a visual history of “small architectures” designed not for humans, but for other species.
