Mount Nelson by Rosie Marks
A collection of works by British photographer Rosie Marks.
The Belmond Luxury Hotel Group, renowned for restoring historic buildings, is currently collaborating with some of the world's leading contemporary photographers to create destination-specific portfolios, carefully pairing each artist with the personality of the selected hotel. Rosie Marks has photographed the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town in Spring 2023 and Winter 2024.
Marks remembers seeing the Mount Nelson Hotel's trademark pink walls during a family trip to South Africa as a child. Years later, in this book, she photographs the rooms, grounds and people who inhabit them with nostalgia, personal connection and her signature rustic humor. She was particularly drawn to the employees of the Mount Nelson. Their portraits offer a glimpse into their daily lives, as they have worked at the hotel for decades and proudly stare out at us from their windows or offices. She explains that she was fascinated by the rhythm of administrative work that overlaps with ritual and community. Morning briefings often conclude with collective prayer and song, an important mark of the start of the day. Above all, her photographs are as much about her as they are about the people she photographs. Her images reveal what is funny, extraordinary and unique to her, depicting the quirks of human existence that we often overlook.
