METROPOLE by Lewis Bush

Overlapse

A collection of works by British photographer Lewis Bush.

London, once known as the Metropole (the main city), in its heyday was the mother city at the center of a vast empire encompassing a quarter of the earth's landmass. But the 'mother' name belies the highly hierarchical and unequal relationship between the power emanating from the city center and the wealthy lords who receive feedback in return. Long after the collapse, a new world force emerged: global capitalism: London rebranded as an 'investment opportunity', modern-day endless demolition and moving cranes, and It has transformed into a city symbolized by sparkling new skyscrapers.

This book chronicles the brutal expulsion of London foundations by corporate developers for the benefit of wealthy investors and absentee real estate speculators. As a result of their aggressive, high-end development, the number of truly affordable housing has dwindled, pushing Londoners farther out into the suburbs than ever before.

Captured on numerous winter nights as we wander through a city of escalating development, the film documents the dizzying effects of London's capital flows. . The framework of the luxury high-rise residential tower was photographed during construction and multiple exposures were used to superimpose the image of the building on top of the building. The burgeoning tangles are a direct reflection of the disturbing scale of the city's transformation. In the process of imitating the sense of loss that many Londoners now feel, the vision and intentions are lost somewhere. - Lewis Bush
