(Imperfect) Cathedral Cars by Thomas Mailaender

RVB Books

A collection of works by French photographer Thomas Mailaender.

"Cathedral Cars" is the colloquial name given to the vehicles used by dockworkers at the port of Marseille to cross the sea from Marseille to North Africa. In this book, Mayländer pays tribute to these "cathedral cars", which defy gravity and embody human achievement with their rope-like appearance of dreams. While evoking famous works of art and sculpture, these cars speak of upcoming voyages, suggesting the movement and flow from one realm to another. The characteristics of children's picture books, with extra thick paper and glossy coating, are adopted to the subject, which is visually unique, almost like a stacking game, and is removed from its original context.
