Iron Ribbon by Kazuhei Kimura

Libraryman

A photobook by Japanese photographer Kazuhei Kimura.

Iron Ribbon is a deeply personal body of work, composed of photographs Kimura took of his partner during visits to traditional hotels over the past few years. Captured in the quiet moments between his main photographic projects, these images reflect not only his affection for his subject but also his love for classic hotels—destinations chosen less for their tourist appeal or scenic views and more for their architectural charm and atmosphere.

Before turning to photography, Kimura was drawn to fashion in his teenage years. He recalls being captivated by an iron ribbon choker created by Japanese jewellery designer Shinji Nakaba—an object that appeared soft and fluid but revealed a dense, cutting coldness upon touch. This paradoxical blend of tenderness and strength had a lasting effect on him. Despite its high cost, Kimura purchased the piece without hesitation and has never parted with it.

Much like that iron ribbon, Kimura sees in his partner the same duality: long hair, a quiet presence, a distinctive elegance, and a powerful inner will. This photobook is both a portrait and a love letter—an exploration of intimacy, beauty, and quiet strength.
