Street Photographs by Shimpei Asai

深夜叢書社

Street Photographs, a collection of works by Japanese photographer Shinpei Asai. Speaking of 1970, when this work was published, it was a time of turmoil and change, such as the security struggle, the Osaka Expo, the hijacking of the Yodogo, and the Mishima Incident. It can be said that it is a symbolic era, such as the publication of Ma's For the Words to Come.

This book contains photographs taken by Asai on Guam. At first glance, it may seem like an escape, but in a sense, Asai may have been trying to recapture the chaotic era. A masterpiece that symbolizes the times, from the flow of so-called compora photographs by Garry Winogrand and others, to occasional hints of New Topographics by Luis Boltz and others.

"And what a monstrous era we live in today. Expo and war, moon rockets and Futen, computers and fashion, all sorts of news are jumbled together on the wave of information. It appeals to the senses. Will it be filled with joy, or will it be bleak and empty? In any case, today's society changes in many ways as seen through a prism. In this age of overgrown society and prosperity, as an individual Human beings cannot help but feel a sense of bright despair.” —Ken Kasugai (from the preface of this book)
